Mexico: Acapulco battleground for competing drug cartels

Eight people have been murdered in an around the Mexican International tourist resort of Acapulco over the weekend.

James Blears reports a destination which was once famous for attracting movie stars and the ultra rich, is descending into a battleground between competing drug cartels.

Listen:

A bar fight left three men dead and another critically wounded.  The bodies of two men and a woman found in a car, two more men shot dead in their cars. An anonymous tipoff led Police to dig up three corpses in a shallow grave.  While in the near the City of Tixla, also in the State of Guerrero, gunmen assasinated Judge Juan Octavio Morales.

International tourist organizations now list Acapulco as one of the ten most dangerous cities in the World.  Last year The Mexican Government launched a coordinated campaign to promote and boost Acapulco.  It was once the annual host for the Country`s Tourism Convention.  Sadly due to rival drug cartels, who`ve included the hotel zone and principal beaches in their pitched battles,  the bold and brave plan has fallen flat.
