Archbishop Paglia visits Iran

(Vatican Radio) The President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, is in Iran this week for an official visit that follows the official visit of Iranian Vice-President for Women and Family, Shahindokth Molaverdi, to the Pontifical Council for the Family in February, 2015.

On Monday, June 13th, Archbishop Paglia visited Vice-President Molaverdi in Tehran.

An official communiqué was released following the meeting, the full text of which may be found below in Vatican Radio’s English translation from the original French.

Following the meeting held at the Vatican in February 2015, the President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, [Monday] made his visit to the Vice-President of the Islamic Republic of Iran for women and family, Mrs. Shahindokht Molaverdi. In their fraternal dialogue, the pressing urgency of fruitful work in favor of the family, the precious basic unit of society, and for the dignity of women, which is too often put into discussion, were the issues of first importance.

The planetary challenge of globalization requires a deepening on all fronts and in all cultures of the issue of the family and the dignity of women, as well as of the terrible news of war and poverty that continue to demand unprecedented attention to those who are often the weakest members of the human society: namely women, children and the elderly.

Finally, we must not forget the current severe demographic crisis that marks not only the Western nations but also other peoples worldwide.

Strong support for the family institution can be an important step to counter the logic of death and exploitation that often mark our world. Such support is possible through the active and cooperative participation of all stakeholders: political, social, religious and cultural. This meeting is a clear sign of the cooperation we hope to develop in an efficient and wise manner for the good of the weakest, for families, and thus for all humanity.
