Bishop Prasad Gallela of Cuddapah in Andhra Pradesh, India was kidnapped and assaulted by unknown attackers on Monday when he was returning after celebrating Mass at Karunagiri Shrine.
Speaking to ucanews, Bishop Prasad Gallela said that unidentified kidnappers came
in two vehicles and took him to an undisclosed location. They hit him and punched
him resulting in injuries all over his body he said.
The bishop said that the kidnappers who appeared to be paid goons and non-Christians,
kept on asking him about the financial transactions of the diocese. The kidnappers
also demanded 5 million rupees (US$75,325) and said that since he helps so many people,
he should help them too.
When asked about their identity they said they were from the police but police does
not behave like that he said. The Bishop said that early the next day they let him
go but left him 90 kilometers away from his diocese.(UCAN)
Cuddapah, which has some 114,800 Catholics, is a suffragan diocese of Hyderabad Archdiocese.
