Pope Francis, Patriarch Kirill meeting cause for "great joy"


(Vatican Radio) The Cuban government has said it is “honoured” to be hosting the meeting between Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill on 12 February in Havana. It will be the first ever meeting between a Catholic Pope and a Russian Primate.

Cuba said it would “provide every accommodation” to ensure the success of the historic meeting.

At the same time, Cardinal Péter Erdő, the Archbishop of Esztergom- Budapest and President of the he Council of the Bishops' Conferences of Europe (CCEE) , has sent a letter to Patriarch Kirill expressing his “great joy” over the meeting.

“The Church in Europe is looking to this event as a further step towards unity and the joint witness of Christians,” Cardinal Erdő writes. “Therefore, I implore the Lord’s blessing on this meeting, that it may have a fruitful outcome, and I assure you of my prayers for this important step towards the unity of the Church and especially for the Russian Orthodox Church.”
