Remembering Vatican Radio's Bernard Decottignies

(Vatican Radio) It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of our Belgian colleague Bernard Decottignies, from Vatican Radio’s French section. Aged just 56, Bernard had been working at Vatican Radio for the past thirty years and was well known for his sharp insights and critical analysis of international affairs. He had travelled as a correspondent on a number of papal journeys, most recently to the Holy Land with Pope Francis in May of last year.

Bernard had a strong sense of humour but he was also very sensitive to the suffering of people with whom he came into contact during the course of his work. Following a trip to Africa with Pope Benedict, he travelled to Angola as part of a fundraising initiative with a group of sisters working with poor families there.

Most at home in the countryside, with his beloved animals and birds, he was also passionate about art and poetry, never losing an opportunity to share that passion with friends and colleagues. He will be much missed by all of us at Vatican Radio.
