UN's Stephen O'Brien on humanitarian needs and Pope's moral voice

(Vatican Radio) The United Nations Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Stephen O’Brien has told Vatican Radio he hopes the UN and those in a much wider field can take inspiration from Pope Francis’ “huge moral authority” in order to do more and to do better in the world.

Mr O’Brien was responding to a question by Vatican Radio’s Lydia O’Kane, on the Pope’s upcoming speech to the United Nations General Assembly next week in New York.

Speaking to journalists following an audience with the Holy Father on Thursday, the UN Undersecretary said the Pope’s address to the group present, “underlined our common humanity, to give the best to our fellow men and women, people in need…”

Stephen O’Brien was in Rome to attend a one day meeting on the humanitarian crisis in Syria and Iraq organised by the Pontifical Council Cor Unum.
