Mexico's president to meet families of massacre victims

(Vatican Radio) Mexico's President, Enrique Peña Nieto, has agreed to a meeting on September 24th with the families of 43 student teachers who were abducted and murdered last year in Iguala, in the south of the country.

Listen to the report by correspondent James Blears:

The meeting comes just two days before the first anniversary of the tragedy, when the victims were allegedly handed over to organized crime elements by corrupt police officers.

So far, more than 100 people have been arrested including the city's former mayor and police chief.

A recent independent report by the Inter American Commission on Human Rights directly contradicts a government claim that all the bodies were incinerated at a rubbish dump, saying it was forensically impossible.

A spokesperson for the families of the victims say they will demand justice for their loved ones during the presidential meeting.
