Catholic ‘Lumen television Zambia’ in the offing

Zambia’s Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has finally granted the Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) a national TV construction permit.  On 18 October 2013, then IBA Chairperson and Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Mwamba announced the granting of a television construction permit to ZEC. However, the actual permit has only been released this week.

ZEC Director for Communications, Father Winfield Kunda disclosed the development this week and added that the national Catholic TV station would be called ‘Lumen TV Zambia’ and be based in Lusaka.

Father Kunda says reception of the permit has excited the Church in Zambia for it has waited for more than 10 years for a TV licence. He however said the development is a mammoth task that calls for support from all Catholics and people of good will.

Father Kunda says that once Lumen TV (Z) becomes operational it will broadcast throughout the country. He has appealed for content contribution from all Church-run production houses in Zambia to make it a success.

In a letter addressed to the Zambia Episcopal Conference Secretary General, Father Cleophas Lungu, the Independent Broadcasting Authority Director General Josephine Mapoma authorised the Catholic Church in Zambia to be a content provider to the Zambia National Broadcasting Cooperation (ZNBC) bouquet via its national TV station.
