Truck kills Mexican pilgrims

(Vatican Radio)  A truck ploughed into a religious procession in Northern Mexico today, killing 16 people and injuring many more. The death toll is expected to rise.

Listen to James Blears' report:

The accident happened in the town of Mazopil in the Northern, largely rural state of Zacatecas. Witnesses say that the truck was travelling at excessive speed and it's brakes failed when it tried to stop, but too late.

It mowed down many pilgrims who were taking part in a religious procession in a scene of carnage.  The injured -- many of whom are in critical condition -- are being treated in local hospitals.

The driver immediatly fled the scene and is being sought by Police.  The State Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation.

The incident has tranformed from an accident into a terrible tragedy with a major loss of life.
