Lone gunman kills three in US movie theater

(Vatican Radio)  A gunman opened fire at a movie theater in the US state of Louisiana on Thursday night, killing three including himself, and injuring several others.

Listen to Patrice Howard's report:

Officials have stepped up security at theaters across the state, though they believe this was an isolated incident. The attack comes just days after a guilty verdict was returned for James Holmes, the man who opened fire in a Colorado movie theater in 2012, killing twelve people.

Witnesses described hearing shots fired in a screening of the movie Trainwreck.

Lafayette, Louisiana police said three people were found dead at the scene; one is believed to be the gunman.  He is described as a 58-year old, lone white man who opened fire 20 minutes into the screening.

At least 8 other people were transported to area hospitals with injuries.

This shooting comes almost three years to the day of the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting, when James Holmes took 12 lives at a screening of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.  He was found guilty of that crime and is awaiting sentencing.
