(Vatican Radio) Indonesia is in the midst of a powerful and sustained period of economic growth – a period that has seen scores of millions of people emerge from poverty, and is set to see millions more join the middle class. Nevertheless, there are still “pockets” of people – 80 million of them, according to some estimates – who continue to struggle, many of whom live on under US$2 / day.
Another area in which Indonesia has made significant progress is that of child protection and security – developments that the government and international agencies are watching closely, as Indonesia has roughly 85 million people under the age of 18 – some 35% of the population.
