Jesuit priest Fr Prem Kumar from southern India’s Tamil Nadu state, who was the director of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Afghanistan, was abducted by a group of armed men on June 2, 2014, while visiting a JRS-run school for returnee refugees in a settlement some 35km from Heart. During his captivity, Fr. Prem was moved to nice different places, and kept all alone, mostly in chains. After over 8 months of captivity, the 48-year old priest was released on Feb. 22, this year. The Indian government was instrumental in obtaining Fr. Prem Kumar’s release. The JRS has been working in Afghanistan since 2005. Before moving to Afghanistan in 2011, Fr. Prem had been working for JRS in India, serving Sri Lankan refugees living in Tamil Nadu. He was recently in Rome and was delighted to have a meeting with Pope Francis on June 10, explaining the Holy Father brought new light into his life while in chains. Well, before talking about that he told us what he thinks about Pope Francis.
