Social service arm of Delhi Archdiocese - Chetanalaya, part 2

The Archdiocese of Delhi in the Indian capital has its social service society called Chetanalaya, which is part of Caritas India, the official national organization of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India for social development. Chetanalaya runs over 10 programmes for the poor and down trodden in Delhi and parts of Haryana state.  To know about these projects we called the director of Chetanalaya, Fr. Savari Raj on his mobile phone in his office in New Delhi.   Last week, in the first part of this interview, Fr. Savari Raj told us that Chetanalaya strives to make the poor and the downtrodden aware of their rights and enables them to empower themselves, for which they run several schemes.  One such innovative programme is environment protection where slum dwellers manufacture jute bags which they urge the people to buy against the use of the environmentally harmful plastic bags.   Likewise, the slum women manufacture coconut coir goods.   Fr. Savari Raj said that Chetanalaya’s workers are from among the beneficiaries themselves.  Today, in the final part of this interview we asked Fr. Savari Raj about Chetanalaya’s programme for children who land up in Delhi from their villages and towns India for better prospects.
