UNOHCR welcomes Nebraska's vote to end death penalty

(Vatican Radio)  The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCR) has welcomed the abolition of the death penalty in the U.S. state of Nebraska. This makes Nebraska the 19th state in the United States to have abolished capital punishment.

The abolition comes after the state legislature voted 30-19 to override the governer's veto of the of the legislation. Over the past 10 years, the number of people on death row in the United States has declined along with the number of those executed.  In 2014, only seven states carried out the death penalty executing 35 in total.  This was the lowest number of executions since 1994.
