Philippine Church holds missionary conference

The Catholic Bishops of the Philippines began a 3-day missionary conference on Monday aimed at reminding ‎every Catholic about his or her innate vocation to evangelize.  Organized by the Commission on ‎Mission (ECM) of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), the National Mission ‎Conference (NMC) May 18-21 at the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay City, has as its theme, ‎‎“Gifted to Give”, which emphasizes faith as a gift that after being received should be passed on to ‎others.  The theme has been inspired by the forthcoming 500th Anniversary in 2021 of the arrival of ‎Christianity to the Philippines and the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Vatican II’s Decree ‎on the Missionary Activity of the Church, “Ad Gentes”.  The conference is also inspired by Matthew 10:8: “Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give”

Fr. Michael Layugan SVD, Rector of the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay, will discuss the “History and Content of Ad Gentes.”  Fr. Andrew Recepcion, president of the International Association of Catholic Missiologist, will then focus on the “Concept of Mission in Ad Gentes.”  Fr. Edgar Javier SVD, Director of the Divine Word Institute of Mission Studies, will talk about “Mission and the Local Church according to Ad Gentes” and will be followed by Benedictine Sr. Felice Imaya Calingayan, who will share her experience working with indigenous people. Bro. Roquel Ponte of Couples for Christ Global Mission Foundation will talk about the beauty of lay mission.  Lastly, Bishop Arturo Bastes of Sorsogon and Chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Mission of the CBCP, will discuss points about the “State of Mission in the Philippine Church and Challenges.”  ‎(Source: CBCP)
