UN condemns IS siege of Yarmouk refugee camp

(Vatican Radio) The United Nations Security Council has condemned the siege of a Palestinian refugee camp in the Syrian capital by so-called Islamic State militants.

The UN called for the protection and safe evacuation of civilians and access for humanitarian aid workers.

It said 94 civilians had made it out of the Yarmouk camp on Sunday, but some 3,500 children were still trapped.

Listen to Nathan Morley’s report:

The security council said on Monday it would look at how to help some 18,000 Palestinian refugees and Syrian civilians in the camp.

Yarmouk became a battleground before the siege, and has been devastated by street fighting, air attacks and shelling.
