Archbishop Sebastian Shaw on terror attacks on Pakistani churches

On March 15, two suicide bombers exploded themselves near St. John’s Catholic Church and Christ ‎Church of the Church of Pakistan, in Lahore’s predominantly Christian neighborhood of Youhannabad, as the faithful were gathered inside for Sunday worship.‎  The attacks, claimed by  the terrorist group called Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaatul Ahrar (TTP-JA), killed 17 people and injured more than 70.   Pope Francis denounced the terror attacks last Sunday itself.

To find out more about the twin attacks and how the Christians of Lahore and the entire nation are coping with the tragedy, we called Catholic Archbishop Sebastian Francis Shaw of Lahore on his phone on Thursday.  He spoke about the utter pandemonium let loose after the attacks and deeply regretted the lynching and burning of terror suspects by a frustrated and irate mob.  Archbishop Shaw also paid homage to Akash Bashir, the young Catholic security guard who died a ‘martyr’ preventing a larger carnage in the Catholic church.  Archbishop Shaw began by telling us the past 4 days have indeed been very tough for Christians.
