Catholics in Yaounde pray for the military fighting Boko Haram

The middle of this week saw a Mass  being  organised by the Yaounde Catholic ecclesiastical province to pray for Cameroon’s military in their fight against Boko Haram.

The Church in Yaounde is convinced that the fight against the Boko Haram Islamist insurgents cannot be won on the battlefield  without spiritual support. It is within this context that the Yaounde ecclesiastical province of the Catholic Church organised a Mass on 4 March  to pray for the Cameroonian army who are at the warfront in the far north region of Cameroon.

The solemn Mass was  attended by the personal representative of the President of the Republic, senior Government officials, Bishops of the Church province, senior security officials, several priests and the faithful who all turned up to pray for the country’s defence forces.

In his homily taken from the Gospel of  Saint John, the Archbishop of Yaounde, Jean Mbarga, underscored the value of peace. He added that the Lord is a God of peace.

The Bishop urged Cameroonians to show love for one another and to continue to embrace the peace which has reigned in Cameroon over the past 55 years. The Archbishop further called on Cameroonians to demonstrate patriotism and national unity in the face of the Boko Haram menace so that together with God, the terrorists would be defeated.

While condemning the ferocious attacks by the terrorist group, Boko Haram,  Archbishop Jean Mbarga indicated that the spiritual battle also needed to be won if the aggressors were to be defeated. Intercessory prayers were said for the President of the Republic, Paul Biya, in his determination to maintain peace and protect persons and their property.

The clergy also prayed for God’s protection of the soldiers at the warfront and the repose of the souls of those who have lost their lives in the war against Boko Haram.

The Mass was animated by the musical band of the Presidential Guard.
