South Sudan: conflict risks creating lost generation

If conflict does not stop in South Sudan, there will be a lost generation of  children without education, access to health services and facing the threat of hunger. The warning has come from the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, who visited the country this week as part of a regional tour.

“This is a country which is rich in talent and rich resources,” said Amos. “If this conflict continues we will see a generation of South Sudan’s children who are lost,” she added.

South Sudan has been embroiled in a conflict which broke out in December 2013 between government and opposition forces. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about one fifth of the population or 2.5 million people are in either “crisis or emergency level” food insecurity.
