UGANDA’s Archbishop Odongo to celebrate fifty years as a Bishop


Uganda’s Archbishop Emeritus of Tororo Diocese, James Odongo will next month celebrate his Episcopal Golden Jubilee at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral, Tororo.

The Most Reverend James Odongo was born on 27 March 1931 at Molo. He was ordained priest in Rome on 22 December 1956.  He became the Auxiliary Bishop of Tororo on 25 November 1964 and was consecrated Bishop on 16 February. He became the Ordinary of the same Diocese in 1968.  In 1999 he became the first Metropolitan Archbishop of Tororo.

On 27th June 2007 the Holy Father, Pope Benedict accepted his resignation from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Tororo on account of the age limit and in accordance with the Code of Canon Law. Archbishop Odongo was a chairman of AMECEA between 1973 and 1979.

In a message of congratulation ahead of Bishop Odongo's jubilee,  AMECEA Secretary General Fr Ferdinand Lugonzo acknowledged the rare milestone. Fr. Lugonzo said, “On the occasion of your Golden Jubilee as Bishop, the family of God within the AMECEA region acknowledges with great appreciation your very significant contribution towards the foundation and the growth of AMECEA."

The current Archbishop of Tororo, Most Rev. Obbo has extended an invitation to those wishing to attend the celebrations scheduled to take place on on 21 February 2015. Mass on that day starts at 10 am.
