Spotlight on altar for Canonization Mass in Sri Lanka

(Vatican Radio) Father Priyantha Silva is the art director of the altar where Pope Francis will celebrate the Mass for the Canonization of Blessed Joseph Vaz on January 14th during his visit to Sri Lanka. A 17th century priest who played a leading role in rebuilding the island’s Catholic community after years of persecution, Father Vaz will be Sri Lanka’s first-ever saint. The altar was designed and first used for Father Vaz’s beatification which took place during Saint John Paul II’s visit to Sri Lanka in 1995 and since then it has been kept in a parish church as a reserve altar on which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. Father Silva spoke to Vatican Radio’s correspondent in Sri Lanka, Father Louis Xystus Jerome, about his decorations and colour schemes for the altar and says its design incorporates "a sacred geometry" used down the centuries.
