UN official says officials involved in CIA torture should be prosecuted

(Vatican Radio) The top United Nations official on Human Rights and Counter-Terrorism, Ben Emmerson, has called for prosecution of US officials involved in CIA interrogation of al-Qaeda suspects.

Listen:

His remarks came after the United States Senate issued a report claiming the CIA misled politicians and the public about what the report called “brutal” interrogation techniques.

After the report was published, US Senator John McCain, himself a POW who suffered torture during the Vietnam war, said the CIA did not live up to the ideals of the country.

``This question isn't about our enemies,” McCain said in a speech on the Senate floor.

“It's about us,” he continued.  “It's about who we were, who we are and who we aspire to be. It's about how we represent ourselves to the world.''
