(Vatican Radio) Uruguay's Tabare Vazquez defeated rival Luis Lacalle Pou in a presidential run-off at the weekend. Vazquez took nearly 53% of the vote, compared with 41% for Lacalle Pou. The 74 year-old Vasquez, who ran on a left-leaning platform out of the Broad Front party, is an oncologist by profession, who served as president from 2005-10. Vasquez won the first round of voting in October, though he did not at the time secure an absolute majority. Incumbent Jose Mujica was constitutionally ineligible for a second consecutive term.
