Indian priest Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara, who lived and died in the 19th century, is the co-founder and first Prior General of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenous congregation of India, based in the southern state of Kerala. He also founded the women’s Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC). Fr. Chavara will be declared saint here in the Vatican on Sunday, Nov. 23, by Pope Francis, along with Sr. Euphrasia CMC, also of India, and four other Italians. In the run-up to this canonization, we contacted on the phone Fr. Paul Achandy, the CMI prior general, to know about Fr. Chavara, his life, his charism and spirituality. We first asked Fr. Achandy about the preparations for the great day, Nov. 23. Listen:
