Mexico: 9 in 10 distrustful of police

(Vatican Radio) A survey by the Mexican National Instutute of Statistics and Geography reports that, during the last year, 90 percent of those questioned said that the police are by far the most corrupt official institution. It's also a fact that many local Municipal Police officers are paid the equivalent of just 220 dollars per month. An independent Study done by the national daily newspaper El Universal,  states that during the past five years, 2,543 police officers have been arrested nationwide accused of an array of crimes including: Homicide, kidnapping, extortion, abuse of power and graft.

The image of Municipal has also been grieviously harmed by the arrest of more than 50 Officers in the Southern City of Iguala. they accused of handing over 43 student teaches, following a demonstration,  to local gangsters who'd infiltrated their ranks. The students haven't been seen since that fateful day on September 26th. An increasing number of experts are calling for Mexico's 2,600 Municipal Pólice Forces to be scrapped and replaced with a better trained and more reliable alternative, as a matter of the utmost urgency.
