Bishop Hamungole: Give special regard to life and dignity of the human person

Zambia’s Monze Diocese Bishop, Moses Hamungole, says society and human life are under direct attack from abortion and euthanasia. This trend needs to be condemned in the strongest terms possible.

Bishop Moses Hamungole said this recently in Monze during the Golden jubilee celebration of Monze mission hospital.  “Monze mission hospital is a real expression of the regard for life in that we attend to life on its coming into this world, as well as on its passing from this world and at both times we endeavour to give it the dignity it deserves. Our role as a Church institution is to proclaim the Risen Lord to his people in whatever circumstance of their lives,” He said.

Commenting on the celebratory theme, “That our Patients may have life and have it to the Full,” Bishop Hamungole said that the Church is called to give service with a memorable and healing difference. He pointed out that the Church has realised that the fullness of life for any person entails a holistic well-being, thus, taking into account the different dimensions of the person’s life.

“I would like to state that the church’s social teaching calls us to give special regard to the life and dignity of the human person. To this effect the Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society,” Bishop Hamungole said.

The Monze Diocese Chief shepherd also assured that the Church ensures that the meagre resources that are channeled towards the running of Monze hospital find proper use by patients and people who genuinely need the service. “In attending to the needs of the patients, we, as a Church, ensure that the meagre resources that are directed into the running of this hospital, from whatever source, get down to the people who genuinely need it. We also do not tolerate thefts, carelessness, wastage, and negligence. We want to utilise our resources to the last bit,” He said.

Bishop Hamungole further acknowledged the efforts of the  Zambian Government in improving the quality of service at Monze hospital by providing two brand new and well equipped ambulances, some laundry, and kitchen equipment.  The Bishop  further paid tribute to the Holy Rosary Sisters, who are the founders of Monze Hospital.

“I would also like to acknowledge that we have come from a past where all our staff were expatriates and mostly religious sisters. For this reason, I would like to thank the Holy Rosary Sisters, who played a major role in setting up this hospital from scratch. They started this hospital as a small health facility with only twenty four (24) beds and only one building, but it has since grown to what it is today  -a 280 bed capacity hospital,” Bishop Hamungole emphaised.

The Bishop concluded by thanking the Holy Spirit Sisters, a diocesan congregation of Sisters who are the current managing agency of the hospital. “My special gratitude also goes to the religious sisters of the Holy Spirit who are currently overseeing the running of Monze mission hospital. A big thank you to you for the work you are doing,” He said.
