Bishop of Daejon: Korean martyrs a model for today's youth

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis will celebrate Mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption on Friday at the World Cup Stadium in Daejeon, South Korea.  The Diocese of Daejeon is hosting the 6th Asian Youth Day.  The area holds a special place in the history  of the Catholic Church in Korea, since it was the location of the earliest evangelization of the country, and also home to many of the country’s martyrs, 124 of whom will be beatified by Pope Francis on Saturday in Seoul.

The Bishop of Daejon, Lazarus You Heung-sik, told Vatican Radio he thinks the martyrs are a good role model for the young people.

Listen to the interview by Seàn-Patrick Lovett with Bishop Heung-sik:

“The martyrs, they lived for God, Both their faith and life are the same,” he said.  “And in these times, many young people, they find many difficulties in the world.  The Pope said they are a victim of this materialism…and the Korean martyrs can be a good model for the young people in Asia.  Not only in Asia, in the world.”
