Cardinal Nichols on UK Church's commemorations of WW1

(Vatican Radio) Cardinal Vincent Nichols, President of the Bishops' Conference, will celebrate a Requiem Mass in London’s Westminster Cathedral on August 4th for all those who died in the First World War. The Mass, which begins at 5.30pm marks one hundred years to the day since Britain entered into the Great War.

Around the UK, many other Churches and Christian communities will also be holding similar commemorative events, while also praying for those still suffering from war and violence in countries around the world today. "As we begin these centenary commemorations,” Cardinal Nichols said, “we earnestly ask for the gift of peace, most especially in Gaza."

Other Catholic Requiem Masses to mark the occasion include one at St Chad’s Cathedral in Birmingham on August 3rd, where Archbishop Bernard Longley will concelebrate with auxiliaries Bishop William Kenney and Bishop Philip Pargeter.

These Masses mark the beginning of a four year period of commemorative events recalling some of the most significant moments of the First World War. Philippa Hitchen spoke to Cardinal Nichols to find out more.......
