Ukraine claims military victories

(Vatican Radio) — Ukraine's government says it has recaptured more areas from pro-Russian separatists in the country’s east, following the army's victory in the rebel stronghold of Sloviansk.

With Ukrainian forces on the offensive, there were indications they planned a major battle for the major cities of Donetsk, a major industrial city of one million, and Luhansk, where pro-Russian rebels have declared independence.

Three bridges on roads leading to Donetsk were blown up Monday. Pro-Russian rebels claim the attack on the highway and rail bridges was the work of pro-Kiev saboteurs.

Kiev says it has already taken over two more cities in eastern Ukraine from pro-Russian separatists, with the Ukrainian flag being raised in Artemivsk and Druzhkivka.

REBELS RETREATED

On Sunday, rebels retreated from Sloviansk, later regrouping in Donetsk.

Pro-Russian separatists say their withdrawal from several strongholds in the Donetsk region was a tactical retreat.

Pro-Russian gunmen have vowed to continue their fight from Donetsk. "We did not surrender. If we die others will come. Fascism will not work here," said one gunman.

Another fighter added: "The troops are regrouping in Sloviansk. Self-defence units will try to enter Sloviansk from Kramatorsk. Don't panic, there is always a chance for negotiations."

BLOCKADING DONETSK

Ukrainian authorities say their strategy is to blockade Donetsk and the rebel-held city of Luhansk, the two largest cities in the east, in order to cut off rebel supply lines.

Civilians would be allowed to leave and seek aid elsewhere.

Battles between Ukrainian forces and the separatists have left more than 400 people dead and thousands homeless since the uprising began in April.

Ukraine's government ended a shaky, unilateral 10-day ceasefire last week, and has since stepped up its fight against the rebels.

Pro-Russian separatists have urged Moscow to send in troops to protect them, but President Vladimir Putin, wary of more sanctions being imposed by the West, has so far resisted their appeals.
