CAR faces "humanitarian disaster"

(Vatican Radio) Uganda's army on Tuesday claimed the Seleka Muslim rebels of the Central African Republic (CAR) are in an alliance with the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), which has terrorized northern Uganda for decades.

Ugandan troops in the CAR claim to have killed 12 members of Seleka in a firefight on Monday, while suffering one casualty.

The conflict in CAR has caused a humanitarian crisis, and thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes.

"We have welcomed at least 12,000 people in the Saint Joseph Cathedral who are still totally without any assistance" said Bishop Eduard Mathos of Bambari.

He told the Fides news agency no humanitarian aid has yet arrived.

“Everything is lacking,” Bishop Mathos told Fides. "I launch an appeal for action to be taken now in order to prevent a humanitarian disaster.”
