Mexican army shoot dead drug cartel gunmen


(Vatican Radio) Twenty two drug cartrel gunmen including a woman, have been shot dead by the Mexican Army, during a battle in the State of Mexico. One Soldier was wounded. James Blears has the details.

Mexico's Ministry of Defence says soldiers patrolling the South of the State of Mexico were fired upon by a group of gunmen and a fierce firefight developed. Twenty five rifles, thirteen pisols, a fragmentation grenade and three trucks were found at the scene, where the cartel members were shot dead.

The State Attorney General's Ofrfice says those killed are members of the Michocan based Family drug cartel. This is one of the biggest triumphs of Mexico's Armed Forces, during the Administration of President Enrique Peña Nieto, which is in its second year.

Mexico's eight year Drug war has claimed more than 90,000 lives.
