Pope appoints bishop of Victoria, Canada , NY auxiliaries


(Vatican Radio) In a series of appointments announced Saturday, Pope Francis appointed a new bishop to the diocese of Victoria, Canada and three auxiliary bishops to New York, U.S.A.

The Pope has named bishop Gary Gordon to the pastoral leadership of Victoria in British Colombia. The diocese comprises the whole of Vancouver Island, the islands off the west coast and the islands to the west of the main shipping channel up the Inside Passage. The Diocese of Victoria ministers to approximately 94,000 Catholics on Vancouver Island.

Bishop Gordon, 57, was formerly bishop of Whitehorse.  A native of Vancouver he is in charge of the pastoral care of prison inmates for the Canadian Bishop’s Conference.

The Holy Father has also appointed Mons. John J. JENIK, Rev. Peter J. BYRNE and Rev. John J. O’HARA, auxiliary bishops for the diocese of New York, U.S.A.
