Pope Francis: speech to Italian Bishops' Plenary

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis addressed the opening session of the annual Plenary Assembly of the Italian Bishops’ Conference or CEI, on Monday evening. The focus of his remarks to the bishops was the essence of what it means to be a pastor – an authentic shepherd of the Lord’s flock. Listen to our report: RealAudioMP3

The Holy Father’s address was articulated in three main points: being shepherds of a Church that is a community of the Risen One; being pastors of a Church that is the Body of Christ; being pastors of a Church that is at once the presage and the promise of the Kingdom.

Pope Francis called the bishops to authentic witness and discipleship, encouraged them to be tireless caregivers to all in need, and to be courageous teachers of the faith.

“Go out to meet anyone who should ask the reason for the hope that is in you,” said Pope Francis.

He concluded, promising prayers for the bishops of Italy, and asking them to pray for him as he continues to prepare for his voyage to the Holy Land, scheduled for this weekend, May 24th-26th.
