UN pays tribute to journalists and media workers around the world
May 3, 2014: The UN paid tribute to journalists and media workers around the world
who risk their lives to inform societies at an event in New York on Thursday. UN
General Assembly held a meeting to celebrate World Press Freedom Day under the theme
"Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the Post 2015 Development Agenda." "As
we celebrate the numerous contributions of the media in building stronger and better
societies, we must also pay tribute to the many journalists and media workers who
every day risk their lives to inform us. Just last year alone, 92 of them were killed
and many more were victims of kidnappings, hostage-taking, intimidation, harassment
and arbitrary imprisonment." Ambassador Ashe stressed that "in the face of such
violence, authorities have a responsibility to uphold the rule of law and bring perpetrators
to justice." World Press Freedom Day is observed on 3 May each year to highlight
issues related to press freedom, including censorship and other difficulties under
which journalists, editors and publishers work.
