Pope Francis to the Oncological Surgeons: we are a unity of body and spirit

April 12, 2014: Scientific research has multiplied the possibilities of prevention and treatment of diseases , said Pope Francis in his welcome address to the Italian Society of Oncological Surgery.
Because we can talk about full health one must not lose sight of the human person created in the image and likeness of God. We are a unity of body and spirit. These two elements can be distinguished but not separated . So even the disease , the experience of pain and suffering, not only affect the body , but the man in his totality. Hence the need for a comprehensive care that considers the whole person , his human, psychological and social aspects and spiritual guidance and support to the relatives of the patient. Therefore, it is essential that health care providers implement a fully human approach to the patient who suffers " he said.
He also said, “ tomorrow begins the Holy Week, which culminates in the Triduum of the Passion , Death and Resurrection of Jesus. And urged them to draw inspiration from the crucified and risen Lord.
