Cardinal Turkson praying for peace in South Sudan

March 21, 2014 - A leading Vatican official, currently on a visit to South Sudan, says he is praying for peace and warned against the globalization of indifference. Cardinal Peter Turkson, the president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, on Thursday began a week-long visit to the poor nation which is being ravaged by ethnic strife in recent month. Speaking to the faithful during a reception at Joseph Parish old Church on Tuesday, he said that he came to Juba to join the South Sudanese in praying for peace. He added that Pope Francis teaches all people in the world to get involved in seeking lasting peace and that “we should not globalize indifference”. The Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan, Archbishop Charles Daniel Balvo, described the presence of the Ghanian cardinal as a boost to peace in the world’s youngest nation that came into being in 2011. Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro of South Sudan warmly welcomed the Cardinal, telling him to feel at home among his people of Africa. Bishop Erkulano Lodu Tombe of Yei, representing the bishops of South Sudan, said the presence of Cardinal Turkson in Juba showed the great concern and solidarity of Pope Francis and the whole universal Church for the fledgling country.
