SIGNIS World Congress highlights need for dialogue for peace
Feb.26,2014: :The President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Archbishop
Claudio Maria Celli, and the President of SIGNIS, Augustine Loorthusamy, officially
opened the SIGNIS World Congress 2014 on Tuesday in Rome. The theme of the Congress
that concludes 1st March is “Media for the culture of peace: Creating images with
the new generation.” Addressing the Congress on Tuesday, Jesuit Fr. Antonio Spadaro,
provoked the more than 300 participants to revaluate what they think and what they
feel about the digital culture. “If it triggers astonishment it is because it gives
shape to desires and values that are as old as the human being”, he explained. Fr.
Spadaro an expert in religion and digital media, author of Cyberteologia and Chief
Editor of the influential Jesuit magazine “Civilta Cattolica,” reflected upon the
ethical and spiritual dimensions of the emerging digital culture. He highlighted
that the internet is “a space that is populated by human beings” and therefore ambivalent.
For him, if human freedom can easily serve evil, new technologies, if used wisely
“can help the desire for meaning, truth and unity”. SIGNIS is a worldwide network
