Leaders of US Canada and Mexico to meet for summit
(Vatican Radio) The leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico will Wednesday
be meeting in the City of Toluca, near to Mexico City. James Blears reports they've
got just over three hours to breeze through a massive agenda.
The North American
Leaders Summit dubbed the Three Amigos, has a great deal to consider. Energy is a
key topic, with Mexico opening up its petroleum industry to international investmenent
and ventures for the first time in 75 years. Security, which is the US obsession will
inevitably be discussed, but comprehensive immigration reform, which would partically
resolve this issue, is perpetually stuck in limbo with a retiscent US Congress.
The
North American Free Trade Agreeement is celebrating its twentieth anniversary, but
issues within still remain such as trucking. Extending the agreement to span Asia
and Europe might also be touched upon. Yet Obama, Harper and Peña Nieto don't have
that much room to manoevre. There are pending mid term Congressional elections in
the United States, the domestic arena in Canada is curently far from ideal and there's
a backlash in Mexico concerning the recent reforms. Listen
