Indian National catechetical convention opens

February 6, 2014: A three-day national catechetical convention was opened in Kochi today with Archbishop Dominic Jala of Shillong calling to deepen the faith of the people through liturgical prayers.

Faith is formed by liturgy and therefore it should lead to experience of God and to deepen the faith in God.

Father Gilbert Choondel, president of the Indian Catechetical Society chaired the opening session. Secretary Father Babu Chirayath, Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council's secretary general Father Stephen Alathara and Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council's Catechetical secretary Father Sebastian were among those who addressed the gathering.

Some 150 catechetical experts from India and abroad are attending the convention to discuss the theme, liturgy and catechism.

The members of the association, formed 18 years ago, are catechetical experts holding post graduation or doctorate in catechetical science.

As Kerala hosts this year's convention, special invitees to it include Catechetical directors from all the 31 dioceses of three rites—Latin, Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara-- in the state.
