Abp Menamparampil Apostolic Administrator of India's Jowai Diocese


Vatican City, 3 February 2014: Pope Francis has appointed on Monday Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil, SDB, Archbishop Emeritus of Guwahati Archdiocese, to be the Apostolic Administrator of Jowai Diocese, in the North East India’s Meghalaya state. The Diocese was a ‘Vacant See’ (without a bishop) since 30 July 2011, when its first bishop, Bishop Vincent Kympat expired.

Jowai diocese was created from the Archdiocese of Shillong on 28th January 2006 with Bishop Vincent. Jowai diocese spreads over 5,433 Square Kilometers (2,098 Square Miles). It has a population of 406,227 people, of whom 81,242 (20%) are Catholics. The Diocese has 12 parishes with 14 diocesan priests, 19 religious priests, 33 religious men, and 40 religious women.
