6th International Day of Intercession for Peace in the
Holy Land
Jerusalem, 28 January 2014: The 6th edition of the Day of Intercession
for Peace in the Holy Land was held on the last Sunday of January. It was attended
by young people from all over the world. The day began at 7 am in Jerusalem, at the
Calvary, with a Mass. The event involved more than five thousand cities in the world,
where young people came together for 24 consecutive hours in prayer, Eucharistic adoration
and Eucharistic celebrations to implore the gift of peace. On the occasion, Cardinal
Peter Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, greeted
all those who partook in the event. In his message, the Cardinal recalled Pope Francis’
Message for the World Day of Peace 2014, adding that, it gave a word of hope and direction
for our lives. We are invited to make our own the words of Pope Francis, he said,
so that we understand the importance of living among brethren, founding all our efforts
for peace on the commandment of Christ himself, to love one's neighbor as oneself.
It is the only possible way for a just society and a stable and lasting peace.
Cardinal
Turkson pointed out the existing individualism and indifference in today’s globalized
world, which lead us to get used to suffering of others. This obviously goes against
the difficult task of humanity to live in unity, taking care of each other.
Faced
with these situations, the Church can only get closer as it has a mission to bring
the love of Christ. An important role, said the Cardinal, is to serve all victims
of wars. He invited all to raise our cry to reach the leaders, calling for an end
to all hostilities.
Cardinal Turkson concluded his message exhorting the young
people who take part in the day, not to be afraid to think big for your life and for
the life of the brothers and sisters that the Lord puts you near. Be witnesses of
the Gospel so that peace can reach every corner of the earth.Source: VR Sedoc
