Be small and humble to commune with God: Pope Francis

Vatican City, 21 January 2014: We need to preserve our littleness to communicate with the greatness of the Lord, stated Pope Francis in his homily at Mass on Tuesday morning in the chapel of Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican. The Pope stressed that the Lord has a personal relationship with us. The Lord, said the Pope, always chooses the little ones, those who have less power and are humble.

The Lord speaks to people, calling each one by name, and he personally chooses. The story of creation illustrates how the Lord with his own hands makes the man and gives him a name. And so begins the relationship between God and man. The Great God always chooses the little ones.
The Pope noted how when God chooses people, "he always chooses those who are small "and less powerful than the others. We tend to look at the outer appearance or power of people but God has his own different criteria. " One example of this, said Pope Francis, was when God chose David who was the smallest son, who didn’t count for his father and who had been sent out of the house to look after the sheep. In fact, reiterated the Pontiff, "man sees the appearance but the Lord looks at the heart. He chooses the weak and the meek, to confound the mighty of the earth.

In Baptism all of us have been elected by the Lord. We are all elected. He gave us a name and looks at us. There is a dialogue. Even when David became king, and when he went wrong, the Lord brought him to his smallness and he said 'I am a sinner', seeking forgiveness.
The Christian faithfulness is keeping our smallness, so that we can communicate with the Lord. Cherish our smallness. That is why, humility, gentleness, meekness are so important in Christian life. It will always be a dialogue between our smallness and greatness of the Lord.
