Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi Apostolic Nuncio to Canada


(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Wednesday appointed Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi as Apostolic Nuncio to Canada.

Monsignor Bonazzi is the Titular Archbishop of Atella in Southern Italy, and previously served as Apostolic Nuncio in Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.

Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi was born in Gandino on June 19, 1948 . He was ordained to the priesthood in 1973, and has a degree in Sacred Theology, in Psychology and in Science of Education. In 1977 he began his studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy where he was trained as a diplomat of the Holy See .

After completing his studies, Monsignor Bonazzi gained experience as attaché to the Apostolic Nunciature in Cameroon (1980-83), in Trinidad (1983-86) and in Malta (1986-89). Then he was appointed auditor at the Apostolic Nunciature of Spain (1991-94) and advisor to the Nuniciatures of the U.S. (1994-96), of Italy ( 1996-99 ), and finally of Canada.

On 19 June 1999, Monsignor Bigozzi was appointed Titular Archbishop of Atella and Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti. In March 2004 he was chosen as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Cuba.
