Year of Faith Papal Mass to take up collection for Philippine victims
Vatican City, 21 Nov 2013: The Vatican has announced that a special collection will
be taken up on Sunday, November 24th at Mass marking the end of the Year
of Faith, and presided by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square. The liturgy is scheduled
to begin at 10.30 a.m.
The President of the Pontifical Council for the New
Evangelization, Archbishiop Rino Fisichella made the announcement in a press conference
on Monday and further details were made known to Vatican Radio on Wednesday.
Accordingly,
the collection will take place before the beginning of the Mass, and will be done
by volunteers. The Philippine collection, in fact, may be the first of its kind. As
far as many officials in the Vatican can recall, no collection has been taken up at
a papal mass in St. Peter's Square in recent memory, at least in the last 10-15 years.
The
proceeds from the collection will be offered to the victims of typhoon Haiyan in the
Philippines. The devastating Typhoon ripped through the country on November 8th
killing more than 3, 900 people. According to the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization,
Pope Francis himself will decide how the donations will be distributed to the Filipino
people.Source: VR Sedoc
