(Vatican Radio) The funerals of nine of the victims of a devastating Cyclone that
tore through the Italian island of Sardinia took place Wednesday. Hundreds of mourners
crammed into the Cathedral in the town of Tempio Pausania, in the province of Olbia
to say a final farewell to loved ones who lost their lives when cyclone Cleopatra
reeked havoc on the island of Sardinia. Among those buried on Wednesday were two
children. Giving his Homily at the funeral service the Bishop of Olbia, Sebastiano
Sanguinetti said that as exceptional and overwhelming as these events were, they are
less devastating if we have learned to respect our Creator, his law and his pace. Two
days after the Cyclone struck emergency services were working to restore power and
water supplies on Wednesday to several of the areas worst affected.
The scale
of the flooding following the storm has meant that over 1,000 people have been forced
to take shelter in parish halls, schools or with relatives.
As the residents
of Sardinia try and rebuild their lives meteorologists are warning that this weather
pattern is set to continue with southern coastal area such as Campania and Basilicata
most as risk. Listen to Lydia O’Kane’s report
