Pope Francis on Monday welcomed in the Vatican the Director General of the United
Nations International Labour Organization (ILO), and held a private meeting with him.
ILO is the UN’s specialized agency which seeks the promotion of social justice and
internationally recognized human and labour rights. In a statement the Vatican said
that for Ryder the dignity of work is a common concern of both the ILO and the Catholic
Church, in particular the situation of the most vulnerable, child workers, domestic
workers and migrants. Both expressed their concern for the victims of human trafficking
and talked about the inclusion of the concept of decent jobs in the post-2015 development
programmes. The ILO collaborates with several institutions of the Catholic Church,
such as the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Migrants and Itinerant People and the
Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, which along with the Vatican Secretary of
State, oversees the Church's commitment for social justice.
