November 18, 2013 - Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari has greeted the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak's birthday on Sunday saying the teachings of the founder of the Sikh religion have timeless relevance for mankind. Guru Nanak Devji “has been an apostle of universal love, piety and spiritual faith,” Ansari said in a message on the eve of Guru Nanak’s 545th Jayanti or birthday. “His divine message of devotion to God, excellence of conduct and tolerance has timeless relevance for the mankind," the Vice President said in his message. Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama also wished Sikhs on the occasion saying, “This sacred time is an occasion to reflect on Guru Nanak’s timeless teachings and the principles that are at the heart of Sikhism, including the equality of all human beings, the pluralism we cherish in diverse societies, and the compassion we owe one another.” “Here in the United States,” Obama noted, “we’re grateful to the many Sikh Americans who give life to these values and enrich our country every day, reminding us that these shared principles are not only at the heart of the Sikh faith, they are central to who we are as Americans.”
