Indian Cardinal expresses solidarity after attack on Damascus Nunciature
06 November, 2013 - Indian Cardinal Oswald Gracias on Wednesday expressed “deep sorrow
and grief” after hearing of Tuesday morning’s attack on the Nunciature in Damascus,
Syria. Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay and President of the Catholic Bishops
Conference of India – CBCI, sent a message of solidarity to the Apostolic Nuncio,
Archbishop Mario Zenari, expressing sorrow and concern on behalf of the 18 million
Catholics in the country. The message of Cardinal Gracias also expressed admiration
for the courage of the Apostolic Nuncio, who continues to stay there despite the violence,
and urged that urgent measures be taken to guarantee the security and safety of the
Nunciature’s diplomatic mission and its personnel. According to Cardinal Gracias
“peace talks are the only option” to solve the crises in the Middle Eastern country.
Pope Francis has consistently appealed for peace in Syria, and earlier September 7th
even held in Rome a Global Day of Prayer for Peace in Syria. The long drawn out Syrian
conflict that continues to deteriorate, has taken a heavy toll of life, not sparing
even women and children. Source: AsiaNews
