Pope warns attachment to money destroys

October 21, 2013 - Attachment to money destroys persons, families and relationships. It’s not money in itself that destroys but the unbridled attachment to it, warned Pope Francis on Monday. "How many families we have seen destroyed because of money: brother against brother, father against son…. The first outcome of attachment to money is destruction,” the Pope said in his homily at his morning Mass in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta residence in the Vatican. Reflecting on the Gospel parable of the Rich Fool, the Holy Father however clarified that money serves in carrying our many good things, many development works for humanity, but when the heart is attached to it, it destroys you.” “It is greed for money which harms.” “To have more and more leads you to idolatry and destroys relations with others.” “It is not money itself but attachment to it, which is greed, that makes you ill, because it makes you think everything in terms of money only. Pope Francis recalled Jesus’ stern warning to those attached to money – “no one can serve two masters”. Either God or money. Pope Francis said, God asks us not to worry as He knows all our needs and invites us to abandon ourselves to the Father who makes the lilies of the field bloom and feeds the birds. The path indicated by Jesus is not one of poverty for poverty sake. It’s but an instrument. The Lord has given us the goods we possess for the progress of the world, of mankind and to help others, the Pope added. (Source: Vatican)
