October 18, 2013 - Pope Francis received in private audience president Paul Biya
of Cameroon, who later met Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Vatican Secretary for Relations
with States. During the talks, the two sides appreciated the good relations existing
between them, which were further strengthened with final touches to the agreement
on the legal status of the Catholic Church in Cameroon, which is be signed soon.
Both sides appreciated the contribution of the Church to Cameroonian society, especially
in education and healthcare, and in promoting peace and reconciliation. They also
touched upon the various challenges of sub-Saharan Africa, emphasising Cameroon’s
